Taking part

Can I join?

There are various checks, called eligibility criteria, to see if either ACCESS or ACCESS II would be a good fit for you. The main eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • You are between 18 and 79 years of age

  • Your weight is 176 lbs (80 kg) or more

  • Your body mass index (BMI)* is

    • at least 30 kg/m2
      OR

    • at least 27 kg/m2 AND you have at least one weight-related medical condition (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea, or cardiovascular disease)

If you have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, unfortunately you cannot take part in either study.

*You can check your BMI using our BMI calculator. You will need to know your height and weight.

If this sounds like a match for you, you can take the more detailed initial pre-screener. Or, if you want to find out more about either study, please
get in touch. A member of one of the study teams will discuss the study
in detail with you and may invite you to a Screening visit.

What is informed consent?

No study-related tests or assessments will take place before you have agreed to and signed an Informed Consent Form. This required document explains the study in detail, including potential risks and benefits, as well as your rights and responsibilities. You can take as much time as you need to read and understand this form and ask the study team any questions you may have.

Is taking part right for me?

Taking part in clinical research requires careful thought. Before you decide whether to participate, make sure that you understand any potential risks involved. There is no guarantee that you will benefit from taking part in either the ACCESS Study or the ACCESS II Study. However, you will receive long-term monitoring of your health from experts in this field, as well as nutritional and physical activity advice. Members of the relevant study team will be happy to answer any questions you have to help you make an informed decision.

Do I have to take part?

Taking part is entirely your choice. If you choose not to participate in one of these studies, it will not affect any future treatments you may need. If you do join either ACCESS or ACCESS II, you are free to leave at any time without penalty to your standard healthcare.

Will I have to pay for the study treatment?

There will be no charge for any study-related treatment or care. You may be reimbursed for your time and travel expenses. The study team can provide further information.

Everyone taking part in these studies will get nutrition and physical activity advice.
